PERT Math Study Guide: Equations & Inequalities

Solving Linear Equations

Isolate the variable by using inverse operations to rearrange terms. For example, if the equation is 3x + 5 = 20, subtract 5 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide by 3 to solve for x = 5.

Solving Inequalities

Use the same steps as equations but remember to reverse the inequality sign if you multiply or divide by a negative number. For example, if -2x > 4, divide by -2, reversing the inequality, so x < -2.
